Marriage Pearl # 19: A Spouse Doesn’t Complete You

Marriage is not about finding someone to complete you, but rather about two complete individuals coming together to create something new and exciting.

A spouse doesn’t complete you… you are you and they are them and both of your should be complete individuals.

I remember being in college and taking a marriage course at my church. I don’t remember anything else from the class but the one thing I learned hit me deep. The miracle of marriage is taking two complete beings and making one. Anyone can take two halves and make a whole only God can take two wholes and make a new one.

This was extremely freeing for me. I am me and I am whole. My spouse wasn’t going to complete me like you complete a puzzle.

I was/am/will ever be enough. I like to serve a God who works miracles. The thought of Him taking two whole people and through marriage making a new creation out of us was exhilarating.

It still gets me excited today.

Steve is who he is and I am who I am and together we are something altogether new and exciting. That to me is what marriage should be.
